Guyot Designs Squishy Bowl and Cup Set

Before I went to Philmont Scout Ranch in 2007, I did not have much of an idea of what gear would be necessary for the trip. Light gear, yes, and surely compact gear. But what exactly was the best choice? Well, when it came time to purchase a dish set for the trip, one set really stood out for me: The Guyot Designs Squishy Bowl and Cup Set. When I first saw it on the shelf at REI, it was obvious that it would be the best choice for my type of excursion. The two-piece set is as squishy as the name suggests; as a result, it easily folds/crushes down and does not need to be carefully stowed or nested inside other pieces of gear. It is also easy to clean: both pieces can be turned inside out and licked clean. The set is made of a light, rubbery substance that is extremely lightweight and flexible. I found that it was much easier to pack and carry than normal rigid plastic or aluminum dish sets. As an added proof of excellence, the set won Backpacker Magazine Editors' Choice honors in 2007.

The Good

The set is light and flexible, and can easily be folded or crushed down to a compact shape that is easy to stow. The bowl (the larger piece - 16 oz/2 cups) is the perfect size for any type of meal, and perfectly shaped to be able to hold solid foods, liquid foods, and all other foods in between.

The Bad

There wasn't much I didn't like about the set. The only issue I came across was that the cup (the smaller piece - 6 oz.) was too small for the amounts of liquid I usually consumed. I ended up taking a separate plastic cup for drinking purposes.

The Verdict

I took the set to Philmont and Northern Tier, and it never failed me. The set is in my opinion the best option for those who need lightweight, compact dishware for their trips.
